How to Apply Foundation Like a Professional: Techniques for a Flawless Finish

A flawless foundation application is the foundation of any great makeup look. Whether you prefer a natural, skin-like finish or full coverage, the technique you use matters just as much as the product itself. Here is how to apply foundation like a professional makeup artist.

Prepping the Skin

Professional makeup artists know that great makeup starts with great skin preparation. Begin with a clean, well-moisturized face. Apply your moisturizer and wait at least two minutes for it to fully absorb before moving on to primer. Choose a primer based on your skin needs, hydrating for dry skin, mattifying for oily skin, and illuminating for dull skin.

Choosing the Right Tool

The tool you use to apply foundation dramatically affects the finish. A damp beauty sponge creates a sheer, dewy finish that is ideal for lightweight foundations and skin tints. Use a bouncing motion rather than a dragging motion to press the product into the skin. A flat-top kabuki brush buffs foundation in circular motions for a medium to full coverage, airbrush finish.

The Professional Application Technique

Start by applying a small amount of foundation to the center of your face, the forehead, nose, and chin, and blend outward toward the hairline and jaw. This technique creates a natural gradient of coverage, with the most product where you need it most and less coverage at the edges. Blend down onto your neck to avoid a visible line.

Concealing After Foundation

Apply concealer after foundation for a more precise and natural look. Applying concealer first can result in the foundation moving the concealer around, reducing its effectiveness. Use a concealer that matches your foundation shade for blemishes and redness, and a shade lighter for under-eye brightening.

Setting for Longevity

Setting your foundation properly ensures it lasts all day. Use a large, fluffy brush to dust translucent setting powder over your face, focusing on the T-zone where makeup tends to break down first. For areas that need extra staying power, like under the eyes, press powder in with a damp sponge and let it sit for a few minutes before dusting off the excess.
