The 5 Beauty Habits I Finally Dropped This Year (and What I Do Instead)

I’ll be honest — I used to be that person with a 12-step skincare routine, a cabinet full of half-used serums, and a sinking feeling that I was still Doing Beauty Wrong. Sound familiar?

Somewhere around the start of this year, I hit a wall. My skin was acting up, my bank account was crying, and I was spending way too much time in front of the bathroom mirror for results that were… fine. Not great. Just fine.

So I started cutting things out. Not adding more — actually removing. And here’s the weird part: my skin (and my morning routine) got better. Here are the five beauty habits I dropped and what I swapped them in for.

1. The 10-Step Routine (Replaced It With 4 Products That Actually Do Something)

I know, I know — the 10-step Korean skincare routine is practically sacred at this point. But here’s what nobody tells you: most of those steps are doing the same thing with slightly different textures. You don’t need a separate toner, essence, and serum if they’re all hydrating. Pick one good one.

My current routine: gentle cleanser, one active serum (I rotate between vitamin C and retinol depending on the day), a basic moisturizer, and sunscreen. That’s it. Four products. My skin has never been calmer, and my morning routine went from 20 minutes to about 90 seconds.

2. Washing My Face With Hot Water (Cold Water, Every Time Now)

This one hurts to admit because I loved a steaming-hot face wash on a cold morning. But hot water strips your skin’s natural barrier — it’s basically a gentle chemical peel every single day. I switched to lukewarm or cool water and the difference in redness was noticeable within a week. If you have rosacea or any sensitivity, this is a game-changer.

3. Over-Exfoliating (I Do It Once a Week — Max)

At my peak, I was using a physical scrub every other day and a chemical exfoliant on the off days. My skin looked polished for about an hour, then it would get tight, shiny, and weirdly oily by midday. Turns out that was over-exfoliation — my skin was overproducing oil to compensate for the damaged barrier.

Now I exfoliate once a week. Sunday nights, gentle lactic acid or a soft washcloth. That’s it. The result? Less oil, fewer breakouts, and a way more even skin tone.

4. Sleeping in My Makeup (Even Just a Quick Micellar Wipe Makes a Difference)

We’ve all been there — it’s late, you’re tired, and the thought of a full cleanse feels impossible. On those nights I used to just skip it entirely. But sleeping in makeup for even one night can clog pores and cause breakouts that take days to fix.

My compromise: I keep a bottle of micellar water and cotton pads on my nightstand. On the really bad nights, I do a 30-second wipe-down while lying in bed. It’s not perfect, but it’s way better than nothing — and it’s so easy there’s no excuse to skip it.

5. Following Every Trend (I Stick to What Works for My Face)

Glazed donut skin. Glass skin. Cloud skin. Strawberry girl makeup. Every month there’s a new look that’s supposed to be The One. But here’s a secret the beauty industry doesn’t want you to know: most of those trends are designed to sell you products, not to actually improve your routine.

I stopped buying products just because they were trending on TikTok. Instead, I paid attention to what my skin actually responds to. For me, that’s hydration, gentle ingredients, and consistency. Boring? Maybe. But my skin looks better now than it did when I was chasing every trend, and I’m spending about a third of what I used to.

The Bottom Line

Dropping these habits didn’t just save me money — it saved me time and mental energy too. Beauty doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, the simpler I’ve kept things, the better my skin has looked. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your routine, try cutting one thing out this week. You might be surprised by what happens.
